What does free on name (von) mean?

Freely in the name means that the costs of transferring the property are borne by the seller. You can think of transfer tax and notary fees. Notary fees for establishing a mortgage are not included in this; these are for the buyer's account.

New-build homes are often sold v.o.n. for sale. Inform clearly in advance which costs are for the seller's account and which for the buyer. This will prevent you from being faced with surprises afterwards.
